WCCO Radio Weekend Sports Host Eric Nelson is a sports junkie who gets his fix in arenas or stadiums. Eric is also a travel junkie, which explains why he once took a five-week trip to different baseball parks in the Midwest and West. Or why he gorged himself on a Florida football feast by seeing three NFL games (in Jacksonville, Miami and Tampa) in five days. Eric went to 23 games in 17 weeks, two training camps and a Super Bowl to write his book, "Slices of The NFL" (www.minnesotascore.com ...scroll to the bottom to find the Slices of the NFL link).

Besides his stint at WCCO Radio, Eric is a Twin Cities-based reporter for Sporting News Radio and writes a column for Minnesota Score Magazine. Eric has covered 10 Super Bowls and was a sportscaster at WCCO-TV from 1995 to 2000.

Eric grew up in Southern California and came to Minnesota because he heard the surfing on Lake Superior was great. He enjoys hiking, playing football, rollerblading, working out and watching NFL Film's videos. Eric is grateful for the family support he receives from Libby, Payton and Connor so he can chase his sports passions.

Living Your Chosen Eulogy is beyond self help, a book on world help. It redefines kindness, illustrating how each of us is an indispensable, critical link in the chain of values that betters the world. Kian Dwyer puts a wholesome twist to the saying “living the good life.”

Living Your Chosen Eulogy awakens the heart and soul, and inspires daily integrity by making readers aware of their best true selves. Through anecdotes, commentary, and exercises, the author shows readers how to tap into their own set of beliefs, values, talents, and skills. This new awareness will determine the meaning of their lives as they learn to live with purpose and intention. Despite numerous surgeries and a diagnosis of a bone disorder called avascular necrosis, Kian Dwyer felt herself catapulted into choosing to live her life with meaning, gratitude, and love. This passion and energy is threaded through her book as she explains how each of us has unique positive and spiritual gifts, no matter our background or circumstances.

Kian Dwyer is the founder of World Help Organization which reintroduces kindness and promotes active giving and living your way. Dwyer holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech/Communications with a minor in Psychology from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. She is an active participant and regular contributor to classes and workshops in development training for special needs kids. Dwyer gives a percentage of book proceeds to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. For more information on Dwyer’s business visit her website at: www.worldhelporganization.org

Columnist and Author Don Boxmeyer joins me to talk about his life of writing and his life after his life saving transplant surgery. Don will also talk about his book published by the Minnesota Historical Society A Knack for Knowing Things brings together in book form the best of his writing and demonstrates his talents as a master storyteller with plain-spoken, intimate prose.

After more than fifteen years of covering hard news, writing a newspaper column gave Boxmeyer the freedom to tell stories of more than just the politicians and the famous. “I realized that the interesting people and places nobody ever wrote about held more fascination for me, and for my readers, than all the governors, mayors, and city council members who never seemed to be much persuaded by my opinions anyhow. I began to collect hermits and hobos, bare-knuckled bar brawlers and bread-baking nuns, short order cooks and hockey coaches, drake mallards named Jake, and bridge tenders, band directors, bear hunters, and quiet old men who wept softly when we talked about the friends they’d left on the battlefield.”

Many of the places Boxmeyer writes about are gone now, except in the memories and hearts of the people who grew up there—Swede Hollow, the West Side Flats, Rondo Avenue, and the Upper Levee. These lost neighborhoods of St. Paul, ethnic enclaves on the West Side, the East Side, along the Mississippi River bank, and in the heart of the city, were razed over fifty years ago. Fortunately for us, Boxmeyer preserves their memory for posterity.

The final chapter in the book is about a special place in the heart of the author: Ashby—a real place, a town of less than 500 out in the rolling, open prairie land of west-central Minnesota. It is where Boxmeyer can be found each spring and each autumn, with his friends and with his sons, fishing, hunting, and just happily hanging out as living proof that everyone needs an Ashby.

“Don Boxmeyer is one of Minnesota’s great storytellers. He seems to know everything and everybody and writes the way most of us only wish we could. A Knack for Knowing Things is an irresistible sampling of Boxmeyer’s work, and it’s like the best booya you ever had, stirred by the hands of a master.” — Larry Millett, author of Lost Twin Cities and The Disappearance of Sherlock Holmes.

“What Royko is for Chicago, Don Boxmeyer is for St. Paul. No one has better chronicled the city’s quirky, sometimes noble, always authentic characters than he.” — George Latimer, former mayor of St. Paul. Don Boxmeyer wrote for the St. Paul Dispatch and St. Paul Pioneer Press for over three and a half decades. Now retired, he lives in St. Paul. This is his first book.

Singer Charmin Michelle - Taste and understatement. Swing and savoir faire. Grace and grooves. Intimacy and panache. Singer Charmin Michelle delivers all of the above and more. Ms. Michelle's savvy art is both fresh and timeless. Her conversational style recalls such earlier greats as Billie Holiday and Nancy Wilson. Yet it's free of any tiresome camp or easy nostalgia. Charmin Michelle truly understands, feels and puts her imprint on small group swing singing. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Charmin moved to chilly Minnesota while still a small child. She's called the land of Prince and Bob Dylan home ever since, though the singer's no stranger to the pleasures and pitfalls of the road. Charmin's had both fun and hair-raising experiences entertaining U. S. Troops around the globe, and has recorded with funkateer Jesse Johnson's Revue and his popular spin-off group, Ta Mara and The Seen. Less is more could be Charmin Michelle's motto. Her club and concert sets are always cool, calm and collected. Even when she's moonlighting in the blues world fronting the jump band, The Senders, she never shouts or strains. "I've always admired singers who can belt out tunes, but I know I'm not a belter." Michelle told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "So I try to use dynamics and emotion to get my point across. And I choose tunes where the lyric and melody has a lot of meaning. That way I can express a lot of feeling without having to shout it out." Michelle makes her point more subtly, both as an interpreter of seldom-heard gems from the Great American Songbook, and as a songwriter. On her critically-acclaimed debut disc "Your Eyes" (currently out of print), Charmin revives such underexposed Billie Holiday numbers as the breezy, Sailboat in the Moonlight", the haunting "Ghost of Yesterday", and the blues-rockin' "Now or Never". She also ably tackles, "You're My Thrill", Mack Gordon's obscure "Me, Myself and I". In September of '98, she released her second CD entitled "Destination Moon".

Vocalist Charmin Michelle and guitarist Joel Shapira have performed together in various group settings for over five years. With the creation of the Charmin & Shapira duo, the two bring their extensive resumes and highly personal musical stylings to a new level of intimacy. A diverse repertoire of great American standards, gentle bossa novas and swinging modern jazz tunes is presented with unique and insightful arrangements, perfectly suited for a lively nightclub, a relaxing get-together, or an elegant wedding ceremony.

Money Is Not The Cure - Controversies in Healthcare - Seymour Handler, M.D. - Recent years have seen drastic increases in the cost of health care. Driving this increase is a common misconception: people at all levels of society—from the lay public to medical experts—firmly believe that spending more on medical care and research will result in corresponding improvements in life expectancy and quality of living. Proposals to manage rising costs and to increase benefits include universal health insurance, improved information infrastructure, and more, but not one addresses the yield of these vast expenditures. Dr. Seymour Handler makes the radical claim that the modest improvements in modern medical care do not justify the inflated cost of new technologies and therapies. More medical care is not necessarily better medical care, and yet the cycle of expensive testing, unnecessary prescriptions, and life-sustaining but not life-improving treatments drives the price of care ever higher.
