Money Is Not The Cure - Controversies in Healthcare - Seymour Handler, M.D. - Recent years have seen drastic increases in the cost of health care. Driving this increase is a common misconception: people at all levels of society—from the lay public to medical experts—firmly believe that spending more on medical care and research will result in corresponding improvements in life expectancy and quality of living. Proposals to manage rising costs and to increase benefits include universal health insurance, improved information infrastructure, and more, but not one addresses the yield of these vast expenditures. Dr. Seymour Handler makes the radical claim that the modest improvements in modern medical care do not justify the inflated cost of new technologies and therapies. More medical care is not necessarily better medical care, and yet the cycle of expensive testing, unnecessary prescriptions, and life-sustaining but not life-improving treatments drives the price of care ever higher. Very good interview with Dr Handler. I've read the publication he edits at North Memorial, and it's very interesting. He does an excellent job.

I'm a proud employee of North, and proud of our health care practioners. Thanks to Dr Handler for all his work.

Three things:

(1) Would we have as many diabetics (thus the diabetic crisis) if the powers that be didn't keep lowering the "normal" range for blood glucose levels? And, how is this influenced (if at all) by the pharmaceutical companies that sell medications for this disease?

(2) The urgency to get doctor care and medicines for the "usual" diseases (IE: common cold, cough) vs letting nature take it's course. Much of this is prompted by lack of parents being stay at home parents--thusly, forcing the issue of getting a doc's note or medicine to get the child back into daycare or school, so mom and dad can go to work. And, employers track absentee/illness for workers, too.

(3) Our country hasn't learned that death IS a part of life and that we should embrace this natural part of the process, instead of fighting it with every single bit and last ounce of energy to keep it at bay.

Dr Handler made dozens of good points and he will tick off foks, but let's allow that dialog to start there.

Thanks :)
