Frank’s interest and work in weather began at an early age. At the age of 6 I assisted my father, Meteorologist Bruce Watson, on location in Colorado Springs, Colorado recording cloud development taking a snapshot of the clouds every 15 seconds using a 8mm video camera. Other projects as young youth include the proposed International airport in Ham Lake, MN in the 1970's, the Cooper-Nickel project in Ely, MN. As a teenager I accompanied my father across the state of Minnesota for his research to write and publish the 1975 Minnesota Weather Almanac, which is now known as the Minnesota Weatherguide. At age 16 I worked on a study for the University of Colorado into the effects of the Heat Island in big cities. My duties included the servicing and maintenance of a dozen thermographs located throughout the Twin City metro area. After high school graduation I continued my education at the University of Minnesota before transferring to the University of Wisconsin (Madison) where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Meteorology.

Sue Zelickson joins me to talk about Thanksgiving favorites!

Sue Zelickson's Favorite White Castle Stuffing

  • 10 White Castle hamburgers (remove pickles)
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground sage or rosemary
  • 3/4 tsp coarse ground black pepper
  • 1 1/4 tsp ground thyme
  • 1 1/2 cups diced celery
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth

In a large mixing bowl, tear the burgers into pieces and add the seasonings and the diced celery. Toss well and add chicken broth. Place mixture in nine cup (2 1/2 quarts) casserole dish and bake covered for about one hour in a 350 degree oven. Uncover for last 20 minutes to get a crusty top...or you can place in cavity of turkey just before roasting. The recipe is enough for a 10 to 12 pound turkey. Allow one hamburger for each pound of turkey which is the equivalent of 3/4 cup of stuffing per pound. Leftovers are great the next day!

Sue's next WCCO radio special will be December 7th, 2008. Below are the links to the foods and services and sponsors she mentioned in our conversation this morning! Just click on the link you wish to visit and it will take you there!

The author’s own brush with American urgency has soured him on the 24/7 work life: “The intention of this book is to free me and tens of millions like me from the hamster’s treadmill,” he says. Rubens ties mindless ambition in the U.S. to major depression, addiction, personal and public debt and even the popularity of American Idol. “Unless we change our nation’s culture,” he cautions, “we will die alone and unhappy with our basalt countertops, Sub-Zero wine storage and massive credit-card debt.” Wait–is that bad?

About Jim Reubens...

I attended Dartmouth College, dropping out in my Junior year during the cultural turbulence of the early 1970s after nearly completing a major in chemistry. I joined one of New England’s first modern communes, dropping out again live my next twenty years as a serial entrepreneur. I then “retired” to follow my passion, politics, and became platform committee chair of the national 40-state Independence Party in 1992. I then served as a GOP state senator in New Hampshire, ran for governor, and served as senior policy advisor and spokesman for former U.S. Senator Gordon Humphrey when he ran for governor. Today, I am an angel investor and member of the Granite State Angels at the Tuck School of Business, focusing on New England high-tech startups. I consult on energy and climate politics for the Union of Concerned Scientists.

North Star Rising traces the impact Minnesota's politicians have had on national politics, from its first territorial governor, Alexander Ramsey, to Vice Presidents Hubert Humphrey and Walter Mondale. Filled with colorful, little-known anecdotes and unusual historical connections, North Star Rising is a highly readable, often humorous, frequently surprising account of how the nation came to take notice of this northern Midwestern state. The book concludes with a look at recent Minnesota political figures as well as a peek at some of the rising stars of the DFL, Republican, and Independence parties. It depicts Minnesota's political involvement on the national stage from the state's infancy to its hosting of the Republican National Convention in 2008.

ISHA: The Isha System

She is considered an "ambassador for peace" by international leaders of opinion. Her conferences and seminars are increasingly sought after throughout the world. Isha imposes no political opinions, dogmas or intellectual concepts, yet she is viewed as a modern day visionary, receiving invitations to speak in international forums, high security prisons, with senators, ex guerilla soldiers, bishops and jet setters. What is it about her message that reaches beyond all differences, moving so many irrespective of their nationality, age or creed?

Isha talks about consciousness. She says that it is our essence, who we truly are. She says that consciousness is love: a love that is unconditional, different from all the kinds of "love" we are accustomed to, and that this love is within ourselves.

"There is nothing more fulfilling than unconditional love of self, and when we experience it, we can extend that love to every aspect of creation. When we love ourselves unconditionally, all fear disappears, and we experience union with everything. This isn't a subtle experience; it's absolute. It is the greatest thing that can happen to any human."
